Which products are effective against enveloped viruses (Coronavirus, Norovirus, etc)?

Background
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses. Some can cause illness in people including mild
symptoms, such as the common cold. Other strains can lead to pneumonia and cause more
severe disease e.g. SARS and MERS.

Surface disinfection
Selgiene Ultra and Selgiene Extreme have been assessed for virucidal activity following test
methods such as BS EN 14476 and BS EN 14675. Results show they are effective against a
range of viruses such as the H1N1 influenza virus, Norovirus, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV and
the Ebola virus.

The Coronavirus is not currently available for commercial laboratories to test against so we
cannot give a definitive contact time and dilution rate. However, given the above test data
we can reasonably expect Selgiene Ultra and Selgiene Extreme to have efficacy against the
virus.
We would therefore recommend using the below products for general disinfection in the
infection prevention and control for the 2019-nCoV.

Product Concentration Contact time
C066/C500 1:10 5 minutes
T066/T500 Neat 5 minutes

C500 Selgiene Extreme: A 1/10 dilution for a 5-minute contact time is effective against Norovirus, and therefore can be used for COVID-19 decontamination. Norovirus is a non-enveloped virus which is much harder to inactivate compared to enveloped viruses. Pre-clean the surface with the product prior to the disinfection step.

• T500 Selgiene Extreme: A ready-to-use spray, which is effective against Norovirus when used at a 5-minute contact time, and therefore can be used for COVID-19 decontamination. Norovirus is a non-enveloped virus which is much harder to inactivate compared to enveloped viruses. Pre-clean the surface with the product prior
to the disinfection step.
Our C066 Selgiene Ultra is effective against a range of enveloped viruses (H1N1 influenza, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV) at either a 1/10 or a 1/40 dilution for a 5-minute contact time. Therefore, it is reasonable to recommend C066 at a 1/10 dilution (or T066 neat) for a contact time of 5 minutes for COVID-19 decontamination.

Hand decontamination
C053 Alcohol Hand Rub Sanitiser and SO53 So Sterile: Alcohol hand rub containing >70% (v/v) ethanol. This level of alcohol has been deemed appropriate by Public Health England for COVID-19 decontamination. The products conform to BS EN 1500 and BS EN 1276. Apply a palm sized amount to hands and rub until dry.
• We supply a range of hand soaps for frequent hand washing, including C032 So Hygienic and C038 Pink Pearl. Ensure hands are washed well for at least 20 seconds.
